How to: Get Your Dog Fix in London

25 April 2017 | Sara Colohan

Are you certified ‘dog crazy’ but just can’t commit to owning your own dog? Maybe you’re not one of those lucky people who can bring their pooch to work or even have a pet in your rented apartment. So how do you go about spending time with a dog in London, even just for a quick fix? We’ve got some suggestions to quell the longing you might feel when you see happy dog owners with their furry friends frolicking in your local park.

The Dog Walker

Would you seriously consider leaving your 9-5 to start your own dog walking business? It’s not as crazy as it sounds! The starts up costs are low and if you work hard and build up your client list – you could be walking every dog in the neighborhood in no time. At an average of £10 an hour per dog, skilled dog walkers can earn quite a decent wage. This of course is serious commitment. You need to be a bit of a dog whisperer to manage up to six dogs on a lead, not to mention managing them off the lead running around in the park. But if you are committed and focused, the advantages are huge - you could be your own boss spending all your time with dogs.

Volunteer at a dog charity

If a full time career as a dog walker is not for you, why not contact some of the fantastic dog rescue charities like All Dogs Matter or Rescue Remedies. These companies are the essential lifelines for so many lost or abandoned dogs. They offer volunteer positions in their various rescue kennels around the outskirts of London (Southend Farm, Gatwick, Guildford, Broxbourne and more) Simply fill out a form online, meet an experienced member of their team who rate your confidence and ability and match you with a rescue dog who you can walk to your hearts content.  You choose your times and days to visit the kennels and walk as many dogs as your legs can keep up with! Not only are you getting your fix of canine love but you are also giving that dog his much needed walk for the day.

Borrow a dog

Who hasn’t heard of Borrow My Doggie? This gives plenty of dog lovers across the chance of being matched with the pooch of their dreams. There is a fee to join for owners (£44.99) and for borrowers (£12.99) and you can browse hundreds of dogs in your area and apply to borrow them. Although the success rate can be a little unpredictable, it’s a great, safe way for dog owners to meet dog-loving borrowers, as some of the happy testimonials on line relay.

Housesitting dogs

If you Google house sitting with dogs you will find quite a few sites on line including Paw Shake and Trusted Housesitters (where you become a member from £7.42/month with no other costs) These can be fantastic ways to house-sit pets in their own home environment and you can treat it as an enjoyable weekend break! Trusted Housesitters is an international site – so maybe you can find a very economical way to travel as well as getting your canine fix!
