Interview with musician Jess Glynne

“I was always singing along to my parents' records.”

“I was always singing along to my parents' records.”

We caught up with emerging talent Jess Glynne ahead of her performance at this year’s Summer Series at Somerset House…

London Calling: Rather Be has leapt up the charts – how has that experience been?

Jess Glynne: Having the number one with Clean Bandit was the most amazing, exciting feeling. To see the success of the record has been an insanely fabulous experience.

LC: What was it like working with Clean Bandit?

JG: It was brilliant. They are such a lovely group of people, so it was a pleasure.

LC: Do you have any particular person or group of people in mind when you write your songs?

JG: Inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere, so it’s different every time. I am really enjoying writing tracks for my own debut album at the moment though.

LC: What’s that process like?

JG: I tend to start with the music first. Once the producer and I have a simple musical idea, I will just throw some jams down and take it from there!

LC: What is the favourite song from your collection and why?

JG: ‘I'll Take You There’ is my favourite song. I just love the feel and drive and scattered melodies and Mavis Staples voice is just perfect to me.

LC: Which artists do you particularly admire?

JG: My inspirations come from Eva Cassidy to Lauryn Hill back to Etta James through to Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Mary J Blige. To this day they all still inspire me.

LC: What would your dream duet be? (They can be dead or alive!)

JG: Amy Winehouse. Since I first heard Frank, I’ve always wanted to sing with her. That’s when I really knew I wanted to be a singer.

LC: What’s the best crowd you’ve ever played to?

JG: I haven't played to many big crowds yet, but the best crowd so far was probably in Banbury. As well as the Summer Series at Somerset House with American Express, I’ve got a few festivals coming up this summer, so I’m looking forward to playing to those bigger crowds.

LC: What’s next! Any releases coming out soon…?

JG: Finishing my debut album! My debut single ‘Right Here’ is out on 6th July!

Jess Glynne is performing at the Summer Series at Somerset House with American Express® on 14th July. Tickets from £28.50 (+ booking fee), available here.
