The Best Comfort Food in London to Warm You Up This Winter

With temperatures dropping to positively frosty, we went on the hunt to find the best warming, comforting dishes the capital has to offer. From curries to roasts, there's something for everyone, so wrap up and tuck in to the below…

Putney Pies, Putney
After a wintry walk along the Thames, there is nothing better to warm your cockles with than pie and mash. Putney Pies is known throughout south-west London for its fantastic range of delicious pies from classics to innovative new recipes. For nostalgia on a plate, try its classic shortcrust with traditional fillings like rich steak and ale, or go off the beaten track with chilli pie, served with sour cream and guacamole, or BBQ pulled pork pie, served with triple cooked chips. And to satisfy those Christmassy cravings, Putney Pies has released a festive menu offering a sumptuous venison pie served with braised red cabbage, Brussel sprouts and chestnuts, a festive feast ideal for a cosy Sunday lunch.
 
 
Tayyabs, Whitechapel
If the cold has really settled into your bones, warm yourself up with a big kick of heat from one of London’s best curry houses: Tayyabs in Whitechapel. This iconic East London stalwart may be frill-free, but its traditional Punjabi cuisine has gained a huge amount of fans due to its delicate blend of spices. Start with the firm favourite of the tender, smoky chargrilled lamb chops, then move on to the chicken keema, an indulgent, rich curry with a comforting creamy sauce which can be mopped up with fragrant peshwari naan. Their dahl is also beautifully simple yet heartwarming - and the best part? Tayyabs is BYOB, so you can enjoy a boozy, fiery curry without breaking the bank.
 
 
Dark Sugars Chocolates, Brick Lane
If you fancy a luxurious hot chocolate to keep your hands toasty as you walk the cold London streets, there is only one place to get it, and that is Dark Sugars. Choose from a range of delicious, decadent flavours such as Hazelnut Praline, White Saffron or Pitch Black for lovers of deep, dark chocolate. All the chocolate used in their drinks is the finest produce from Ghana, which owner Fatou Mendy has sourced on her travels. Blacklock, Soho, Shoreditch and the City
There is no better way to end a chilly week than with a big Sunday roast, and there is no better place for a Sunday roast than Blacklock. Using locally sourced potatoes, your serving of mash is freshly prepared for each person, resulting in extra creamy satisfaction. Choose from classic mash or add some extra flavor with Colcannon (traditional Irish mash with milk, butter, cabbage and onions) or sweet potato mash on the menu for something a little different. And the decisions don’t end there, with 9 different sausages to choose from (we like the sound of the Mother Plucker: chicken, garlic and white wine) and 5 different types of gravy, there are endless combinations to create. Even the herbivores don’t get away with it, with vegan options for each component.
