We are either in a coin factory or a distillery… Manchester’s distillery scene in booming as of late with a host of different businesses bringing their own identity, ideas and infusions to the alcohol distilling game. Let’s visit the best of the botanical-infused bunch in Manchester…


1. Defiance Gin

Defiance Gin have been making headlines on a global stage recently, having been voted best in the world at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2020 where they bested over 3,000 other entries. That’s serious. The distillery’s Gin Academy hosts two different experiences that will take you through the process that unfolds to make their delicious and defiant spirits.

2. City of Manchester Distillery

The City of Manchester Distillery is a stunning location in Manchester’s innovative and lively Green Quarter. The distillery runs courses where you can learn about the history of the industry in either the Gin Experience or the Rum Experience. The 5-star rated 3-hour long Gin Experience has been running since 2016 and at the time of writing is preparing to open up new bookings once more so stay tuned…

3. The Spirit of Manchester Distillery

Next up is The Spirit of Manchester Distillery, a venue offering two experiences; a tour of the distillery and tasting (45 minutes) and an immersive Make Your Own Gin session (2.5 hours). The latter course will take you through the process of choosing your own botanicals, processing them and applying the laws of gin distilling to produce a bottle you’ll be uniquely proud of.

4. Sisters Distillery

The aptly named 4 Sisters Distillery is quite uniquely, a family run affair. Run by four biological sisters, the distillery sees its gins as an extension of their deeply entrenched family values. 4 Sisters offers a tour of the premise which involves two hours of touring the various operational rooms, learning about the origins of the business, the history of gin, and the modern ‘gin renaissance’. It’s all topped off with, you guessed it – a delectable gin cocktail.
