National Sticky Bun Day: Top 5 Sticky Buns in the UK

19 February 2018 | Sian Brett

Dough that melts in your mouth, and that little bite of cinnamon at the end; we love a sticky bun. So it’s a good thing that 21 February is National Sticky Bun Day (of course) and we have the perfect excuse to eat as many as possible. For breakfast with a coffee, as an after lunch snack or even as a late night indulgence, there’s no wrong time to enjoy this baked treat. Here are our favourite places to go and seek them out.

Nordic Bakery, London
A Scandinavian café with four branches in the heart of London, Nordic Bakery offers a peaceful spot to indulge in cinnamon buns as well as the choice to take their delicious cakes away with you if you’re in a rush. The taste of the cinnamon buns is matched only by the sleek Scandi interior, a detail the bakery work hard to maintain, believing beautiful spaces bring harmony and peace. When you’re having your quiet moment in the calm of the café be sure to snap a photo and share it with them using #MyQuietMoment to get it featured on their website.

The Pudding Stop, St. Albans
Run by bake off contestant Johnny Shepherd and located in a part-bakery, part-café, The Pudding Stop not only offers the best of baking, but also a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that stays open until 10pm (11pm on weekends). As well as their mouth-watering sticky buns, you can also have a cheese based dinner here, or savour any of the other baked goods which sit in the counter just waiting to be devoured. On Sunday nights the café holds a film club, screening a movie onto the back wall of the café and inviting customers to indulge in both movie magic and pudding.

Nash’s Bakery, Oxford
Established in 1930 by William Nash, who continued to work away at the bakery into his 90’s, Nash’s Bakery has long been a stalwart of Oxford and is the perfect place to go and pick up a sticky bun that has that home-made feel. The bakery offers tons of other baked goods; be sure to pick up some of their bread especially, as Nash was crowned National Hovis Bread Champion in 1951 and since then it’s only got better!

Pinkman’s Bakery Bristol
Listed as one of The Sunday Times top 25 bakeries in the UK, no doubt for its sticky buns, Pinkman’s makes sure that its fresh bread is out of the oven by 8am every morning, ready for you to get stuck into. Their sticky buns are not the only pastries it has on offer, with filled brioches and sausage rolls also on the menu. The pizza selection is not only wide and mouth-watering but is also on Deliveroo, so if you’re tucked up in bed by the time you decide you want something from Pinkman’s, it can still make its way to your belly.

Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House, Bath
For an alternative kind of sticky bun, head to Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House in Bath for a historic baked good, made with a secret recipe that’s been around for hundreds of years. The Sally Lunn Bun is technically part bun, part cake, and tastes a bit like a Brioche. But that’s not all that Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House has to offer – there’s dinner and theatre dinner menus, and you can have sweet or savoury toppings on your bun throughout the day. Housed in one of the oldest buildings in Bath you can find out all about the woman that the café is named after as your munch away on this Bath speciality.
