Russian Art Finds A Home in London

19 April 2012 | Tom Butler

The very finest examples of contemporary Russian art are right here on your doorstep. So what are you waiting for!

London has long been championed as an all embracing, multi-cultural city, yet tangible examples of this diversity and warmth are often hard to identify. Erarta Galleries however, are one such example of London welcoming another culture as rich and illustrious as it’s own to it’s heart. Erarta on Berkeley Street is an art gallery exhibiting the very finest of Russian Contemporary Art.

It would be slightly unfair to call it one of the ‘emerging art markets’ given that Sotheby’s last auction of Russian art last November brought in over £5,500,000. And the success of Erarta in London only goes to show that Russian Art is now firmly established amongst the European cognoscenti.

It is perhaps a combination of the artwork on offer and the huge demand for it that makes London’s art scene the perfect environment for Erarta Galleries following on from the launch of their first gallery in St Petersburg in 2008. The gallery director, Diego Giolitti, sees it as a natural progression.

“The mission of Erarta has always been two fold: first, to promote artistic freedom, ingenuity and skill, and, second, to promote contemporary art as an international exchange of ideas and practices. London, as a major hub of the international art world, is uniquely positioned to contribute to the cultural exchange that is contemporary art.”

“London collectors are impressed by what is in offer from the Russian art scene. The extremely good technique, interesting themes and a quality of the imagination that these connoisseurs describe as a sort of new consciousness but easy to relate to, are definitely doing the trick. This success is also due to the fact that London is home to many notable Russian collectors interested in maintaining a healthy international market for Russian art.  They are first and foremost knowledgeable collectors and very keen in fighting to establish Russian artist on the international art scene.”

As part of the gallery’s programme in 2012, they have teamed up with the Gift of Life charity for the Past, Present & Future exhibition currently being held. The exhibition itself highlights the huge diversity and richness of the Russian contemporary art scene, and with 30% of sales proceeds going to the Gift of Life foundation it’s a fantastic link up that benefits all.

“The Gift of Life/PodariZhizn foundation is a leading charity in Russia, providing aid and support for children with cancer. The foundation has been operating since 2006 and provides assistance for over 2000 child patients in Russian clinics every year. The foundation pays for surgical procedures and medicines that are not covered by the state; it searches for bone marrow donors, and provides social and psychological help for patients and their parents. Gift of Life UK was established in 2011 as a sister charity to Podari Zhihn. The two charities work hand-in-hand to maximize the care they offer to children who might otherwise have no hope for successful treatment.”

The tie in with the Gift of Life and Diego and Erarta’s passion for Russian art will ensure the organisation and therefore it’s art scene will continue to grow and thrive. London is just the tip of the iceberg for such a forward thinking group, explains Diego.

“We have just opened a new gallery in Zurich and for the next two years we have even more surprises in store. Erarta Galleries are in the process of opening new gallery spaces in Hong Kong and Moscow, but we are also planning to participate in selected art fairs around the world.”

So with Past, Present & Future currently exhibiting, and a fantastic programme lined up for the rest of 2012, a toast to London continuing to champion international art and the future of Erarta for many a year to come.
