The Best Food in London this September

The days are already shorter, and summer is definitely coming to an end. But it’s not all doom and gloom: a whole heap of new restaurant arrivals will make September your tastiest month yet. From experimental cooks to health gurus via the meat mad, there’s a new eatery for everyone this month.

While the name Flavour Bastard certainly makes this new restaurant stand out from the plethora of existing Soho eateries, it's title apparently also has a deeper meaning. Flavour Bastard’s Executive Chef, Pratap Chahal, claims it is due to the restaurant’s menu not being tied to any particular cuisine. Instead Chahal mixes ingredients and flavours from all over the world to create a flavour sensation and, with a resume that includes Gordon Ramsey’s at Claridges, Chez Bruce and Cinnamon Club, we tend to trust him. Through their array of small, medium and large plates (scale up or down according to your hunger’s demands), you can travel the globe with Mediterranean combinations such as pecorino, chorizo and lentil doughnuts and Asian influences such as steamed rice cakes with kimchi. Anything goes here, so expect unusual flavour combinations and dishes which cross continents; the glazed aubergine with peanut butter crumble is one to try. Their cocktail menu aims to be as experimental as the food, with a focus on fermentation techniques; we’re guessing they’ll taste much better than they sound. With an ideal location on Frith Street and a stellar team behind it, Flavour Bastard will be a hot spot this autumn.

After becoming one of the capital’s most sought after steakhouse franchises, M Restaurants are opening a brand new restaurant in Twickenham: M Bar and Grill. Still with a focus on outstanding meat, this bistro style restaurant aims to offer the same delicious food M has become synonymous with, yet in a more casual environment. Located a stone’s throw from Twickenham stadium and within the Brewery Wharf development, M Bar and Grill will feature the UK’s first ever 100% full blooded Highland Wagu beef, instead of a cross breed found on its competitors’ menus. These cattle will have been hand fed seaweed over six months, to develop a level of marbling and tenderness unrivalled in the meat world - an absolute must for any meat mad punter. Wine will be served by the tap, allowing you to easily find the perfect match for your steak. Bookings are being taken from early next month so, if you want to be one of the first to taste this exceptional cut of meat, pop 11 September in your diary.


M Bar and Grill, Twickenham
 
Another new spot for the carnivorous is The Coal Rooms; due to open within the original ticket office of the Grade II listed Peckham Rye Station. The brainchild of former Smokehouse chef Sam Bryant, this restaurant will have an open fire pit and an onsite butcher, cutting and firing up some seriously good meat. The team behind Old Spike Roastery are also on board, so there will be some prime coffee alongside prime rib. And you must try the coffee cured bacon sandwich which combines these two artisans together in a delicious breakfast bap. One great feature of this new restaurant is their focus on sustainability; during the day, they collect any unused ingredients and create amazing wraps and flatbreads with them to add to their dinner menu, reducing food waste.
 
If meat doesn’t tickle your pickle, one of the Big Apple’s hippest vegan spots is crossing the pond to open its first non-US based cafe in the Big Smoke. by Chloe. is all about the plant based lifestyle, offering fresh juices and smoothies, vegan burgers, salads and healthy fries (is there such a thing?!). They also have a range of homemade vegan ice creams in some exciting flavours such as kale and matcha cookie. The vegan Mac and Cheese is rumoured to be as tasty and satisfying as the real thing, and with the news that their Greenwich Village flagship restaurant has queues on a weekend to rival Barrafina on a Saturday night, even the world’s biggest carnivore may be tempted to try this new healthy opening. Exact location is still to be confirmed, but by Chloe. will be opening its doors in Covent Garden sometime in September.

Another American import, which has held its own in London for many years, is opening its 8th UK restaurant; Shake Shack will add another venue to its family in Cambridge Circus. As always, it will be serving up good, juicy burgers fast with sumptuous milkshakes. The décor is rumoured to reflect its Theatreland location, with homages to the many theatres close by, making it the perfect pre- theatre dinner spot.
