We may have chosen to leave the EU in 2016, however Europe has definitely not left the London food scene, with more restaurants celebrating cuisine from the continent opening their doors this April. Whether you like to taste the Mediterranean Sea or the cold winds of Scandinavia, there is something for you to try this month. Pair that with another addition to everyone’s favourite beer hall franchise, and April is shaping up to be a very delicious month indeed. Look at London Calling’s top food and drink picks for this coming month.


Nuno Mendes, of Chiltern Firehouse fame, is back at it with a new Shoreditch based supper club, which opens on 3 April. Maos will be an intimate space, feeding only fourteen people per night, and aims to experiment with classic Mediterranean flavours and fresh ingredients, to create an unforgettable dining experience. No menu has been released yet, however the air of mystery surrounding what Mendes calls ‘a kitchen, table and wine room’ only makes us what to test what inevitably will be delicious food, inspired by Mendes’ Portuguese heritage, even more. Although we may be waiting a while to taste, as while the supper club is open for bookings, most weekends for the foreseeable future are full. At £150 per head, this meal will be pricey, but with Mendes behind the pass, you know it will be an unforgettable one.


Another new opening bringing the delights of the continent to London is Sabor, a tapas bar created by the dynamic duo of Nieves Barragan and Jose Etura, ex Barrfina chef and General Manager respectively. Situated on Heddon Street, we anticipate this restaurant to pack a seriously flavorsome punch. Sabor will consist of two floors, one offering more casual, small plate style dining, and another level for a more communal feast. The menu downstairs will centre around the in-house fishmonger, which allows you to see the chefs at work with an ever changing selection of fresh fish and seafood, alongside dishes such as salt cod tortillas, fresh cheese and black truffle brioche and Iberican duck breast. Upstairs, take along a large group of friends and tuck on in to the sharing suckling pig with patatas fritas topped with rosemary cheese. And to wash it all down with? Sabor will feature a wine cellar which showcases the best wine from the Basque region.

Ekte Nordic

With all the snow which has been falling recently, you may be forgiven for thinking you have been transported to Scandinavia, and now you can get a taste for its Nordic cuisine with Ekte, the new eatery opening in the City this April. Ekte offers all day Nordic cuisine, so whether you are grabbing a smorrebrod sandwich or a Danish in between meetings, or wanting a heartier meal, this place has it all. Their rye bread sandwiches are topped with options such as salty smoked trout or creamy goats cheese with burnt beetroot. For after work dinner, head there for seared peppered venison with preserved plums, apple pistachio and almonds, and to top it all off, order their Norwegian hazelnut cake with chocolate sauce for some serious indulgence.

Brewdog Seven Dials

After work drinks in the Theatreland district have just got a whole lot better, with the opening of a new Brewdog directly opposite the Cambridge Theatre. This new bar will feature a changing array of 20 cutting edge craft beers on tap, from Brewdogs’ own breweries and others they love from around the globe. Brewdog knows there are few combos better than a beer and a burger, so thankfully they have a mouth wateringly good burger menu to get your teeth stuck into; try the Chipotle Chorizo burger with padron peppers and smoky mayo for something with a little kick. They also serve brunch (the eggy bread with fried egg and BBQ pit beans sounds deliciously dangerous for your arteries), and have a wide range of cocktails on offer too for those who don’t like beer.

Banh Bao Brothers

One of the first restaurants to be named as part of new Leake Street Tunnel development, Banh Bao Brothers will be serving up modern Vietnamese food in Waterloo from this April. The restaurant aims to celebrate the diverse types of noodles that Vietnam is famous for alongside some killer cocktails and Saigon beers. Their signature dish will be the breakfast banh bao, which will combine minced pork, Chinese sausage and quail’s egg for a taste sensation that can be eaten any time of day. As well delicious food, Banh Bao will be featuring work from three top graffiti artists so the décor is in keeping with the tunnel surroundings.
