Top 5: Best Places to watch the Olympics on a Big Screen

4 August 2016 | Stephanie Brandhuber

It wouldn’t quite be the Great British Summer without a few rain showers, would it? Even though this week’s grey clouds might make it seem like our summer is good and gone, the real excitement of the season is only just about to begin! Friday 5th August marks the start of the Rio Summer Olympics 2016, and it’s hard not to be excited about it. Although it won’t be a patch on London 2012 of course! Who doesn’t love watching the world’s best athletes compete against each other? It’s pretty inspiring to say the least. Harnessing this inspiration and coupling it with a big dose of optimism, we’ve put together a list of the best places to watch this summer’s Olympics on a big screen. Maybe if we all close our eyes and wish really hard, the sun will come out again for us to take full advantage of these great venues…get ready for the Mobot once more, here’s hoping!

Pop Fields at Pop Brixton

Pop Brixton has created a brand new outdoor space that is playing host to great sports coverage and entertainment this summer. This buzzing hub of activity in the heart of Brixton will be screening all the Olympic highlights to come out of Rio and will also be selling ample food and drink courtesy of Pop Brixton’s community of traders. Head here to treat your taste buds to Aqua Na Boca and Bull & Rancher’s selection of Brazilian delicacies and don’t miss the new bar that’s opened in partnership with Brixton Brewery.

Merchant Square

From wrestling to shot put, pop on over to this Paddington hotspot between the 5th to the 21st August to watch live Olympic screenings in the square’s luxurious lawn area. With deck chairs and plenty of food and drink options around, Merchant Square is the perfect place to catch some sports action on your lunch break or after work. It also happens to be one of the Rio Olympics’ Official FanZones, meaning that as of August 6th, the Olympic games will be showcased on a big screen in The Scoop, the 1,000-seater amphitheatre between Tower Bridge and London Bridge. Heading over to this Summer Festival will give you great views of the Thames and one of the best atmospheres in which to watch the games.

Belushi’s the Dugout

As much as we may all collectively hope for permanent sunshine, our precarious British summers don’t always guarantee blue skies. For that reason we’ve thrown in a fun indoor alternative to our outdoor options, just in case the weather decides to be stubbornly un-sunny. Belushi’s is a renowned brand with several bars in London alone and the London Bridge branch has become a firm favourite with sports fans thanks to its sports-themed basement bar called The Dugout. Kitted out with countless screens, this is the perfect spot to watch all the Olympic action coming out of Rio, rain-free.

Belushi’s The Dugout is at 161- 165A Borough High St, SE1 1HR
