Top 5 Ways to Treat Your Mum This Mother’s Day

Kate Plummer

Mums. Mams. Maws. Mummies. Motherships. They are indeed truly wondrous creatures. They always give the best advice, they make the best cup of tea and they are guardians of all the incredibly embarrassing photos from your childhood (not sure that last one’s a good thing actually). We believe they deserve treating all year round but with Mother’s Day so close on March 11, here’s some extra special ideas to treat the woman who squeezed you out of her…ahem…however many years ago.

Sunday Roast with a Gospel Choir – Albert’s Schloss, Manchester
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a mother in possession of a kitchen will make your favourite roast dinner. Despite the fact that we all love our mum’s roasts best, we think she deserves a break from the cooking on Mother’s Day, which is where the Bavarian themed Albert’s Schloss steps in. Not only can this popular Manchester venue offer up a hearty serving of deliciousness thanks to their Cook Haus roasts ranging from succulent meats to the popular veggie wild mushroom and butternut strudel, but as a special Sunday treat they have a live Gospel Choir for some soulful sounds. Now that’s surely the perfect way to praise the angel that is your mam.

Afternoon Tea at The Palm Court - Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh
For anyone wanting to earn some major brownie points, why not push the boat out and treat the mothership to the splendour and luxury of a delicious Afternoon Tea in the stunning setting of the Balmoral Hotel’s famous Palm Court? As you’re serenaded by a harpist, enjoy a vast selection of teas or a glass of vintage bubbly (because why not?) accompanying a selection of tasty morsels from delicate sandwiches, pastries almost too pretty to eat and fresh from the oven lighter than air scones smothered in clotted cream and jams. It may not be actual brownie points but we’re pretty sure with that mouth watering menu, your mum won’t mind.

RHS Garden Wisley - Surrey
One for all those green-fingered, outdoors loving mamas out there, take a lovely Mothering Sunday stroll through the beautiful gardens at RHS Wisley just in time for the first blossoms in their orchard and spotting the first budding spring blooms peeking out from the earth. For an early celebration, go a day early on 10 March for their Orchid Show to enjoy an array of colour and rarity in these gorgeous flowers.

Sing-A-Long-A Mamma Mia! -  The Prince Charles Cinema, London
If your mum’s a musical fan who’s open to a little silliness then Take A Chance on The Prince Charles Cinema’s Mothers Day sing-along screening of Mamma Mia! From its stage musical beginnings to this 2008 cinematic version, the combination of comedy, storytelling and, of course, the hits of ABBA, has turned this into one of the best-loved musicals around (plus of course, MERYL). With lyrics on screen to guide you through, fancy dress encouraged so mum can dig out her old platforms, and props to add an extra element to the whole event, you won’t need to send out a SOS this year when it comes to planning Mother’s Day for your very own Super Trouper.

Delicious Brunch – Kooks, Brighton
As a child did you ever attempt to make Mother’s Day breakfast in bed for your mum? If so then the memories of cold sugary tea, cereal accidentally sloshed onto the duvet and the smoke alarm going off at 7am as the waft of burnt toast fills the air might be familiar ones. Now we’re older we’ve realised the secret of a great Mother’s Day breakfast is simple – take her out for it. If you’re lucky enough to be celebrating the day in Brighton then take your mum for a meander along the Laines with a pit stop at Kooks. With good weather not always guaranteed at this time of year (see last week’s #beastfromtheeast) Kook’s Melbourne brunch-culture vibe is the spot-on atmosphere to kick off your Sunday. The creative well-thought menu means there’s something to cater to everyone’s brunch tastes, with our favourite being the Eggs Benedict involving maple glazed ham hock, so you can start Mother’s Day by treating your fave lady to breakfast, sans the shrill ring of the smoke alarm.
