Where to Eat: Pub Grub in Bristol

27 September 2019 | Maisy Farren

Spotlight on: King Street Brew House
Welsh Back, Bristol, BS1 4RR

There’s nothing quite like pub grub. No tiny portions and faux gourmet dishes here, we’re talking fish and chips with tartare sauce, loaded fries and proper burgers. Find all of the above here at King Street Brew House, a city centre micro-brewery known for offering a huge range of keg and cast beers. Unlike many pubs where food is a mere afterthought, this pub boasts a simplified menu of decent dishes that they’re proud to serve. Their specialisation is in pizza, creating 14” square pizzas that are ideal for sharing with the table, alongside some sides of course. Those less keen on sharing (no judgement here) can devour one of many main meals, including beer battered fish and chips or the brewhouse burger!

Head down before 3pm midweek to grab one of their lunch dishes for a fiver (or £6.50 with fries). This great deal includes a classic fish finger sandwich or a tasty Philly cheese steak sandwich on sourdough. For those who fancy a small bite after an afternoon of day drinking, the sides and sharers options include sunflower seeded halloumi fries or a range of loaded fries! You’ll also find a banging Sunday Lunch here, but with any good pub that should go without saying.

Best of the rest:
Punchbowl Alehouse and Kitchen
23 Old Market, Bristol, BS2 0HB

What? A Wickwar Wessex Pub Co. pub and restaurant, offering great drinks from their local Wessex brewery.
Where? Just off Temple Way, 10 minutes from the train station.
Why? Food is as important as locally brewed ale here, and their regionally acclaimed chef oversees the home cooking of bar snacks and an exciting main menu. Enjoy a classic steak and chips or splash out and try their roasted hake. Just be sure to grab some buttermilk onion rings to go on the side – they’re to die for.

Aluna
12 Broad Quay, Bristol, BS1 4DH

What? Cocktail bar with amazing pan-Asian menu.
Where? Just over the road from the Bristol Hippodrome.
Why? If you fancy a pub meal but don’t tend to go for British or American dishes, then head down to Aluna for some exciting pan-Asian dishes. Steak and chips is still on the menu, alongside a katsu chicken burger or even teriyaki salmon!

The Lansdown
8 Clifton Road, Bristol, BS8 1AF

What? Family run local pub with craft beers and local food.
Where? Just on the brink of Clifton Village, close to Brandon Hill.
Why? This pub has a great community of locals who regularly come back for the proper good pub grub. Grab a towered-up burger, a quality pie made locally in Bristol or even a Gloucestershire pickled egg (if that’s the kind of thing you fancy).
