It’s what hundreds and thousands of women have done…

The Tower Theatre is delighted to stage A Doll’s House by Tanika Gupta from the play by Henrik Ibsen and Directed by Olivia Chakraborty.

Tanika Gupta transposes the setting of Ibsen’s classic play to India in 1879 where ‘Nora’, now Niru, is an Indian woman married to ‘Torvald’, now Tom, an Englishman working for the British Colonial Administration in Calcutta. Niru risks her own reputation in order to save her husband’s and in the process discovers herself.

This new version of A Doll’s House takes a fresh look at the play, shining a light on British colonial history and race relations as well as gender politics and class, enabling an analysis of different forms of subjugation and servitude.
Premiered at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in 2019, It garnered multiple 4 star reviews including from The Guardian’s Michael Billington, who said: "Tanika Gupta has transposed Ibsen’s seminal play to 1879 Calcutta and the result is multilayered, massively intelligent and moving."
