Brighton-based dance company Project Female demonstrate their contemporary skill and Olivier award-winning performance artist Marisa Carnesky turns a downtown city street into a spectacular variety show at this year’s Brighton Festival, from 4-26 May. Elsewhere, circus performers from as far afield as Australia and Italy perform breathtaking stunts, in an eclectic programme that embodies both the Festival and the city’s commitment to the arts.  

On 11 May, Project Female present a triple bill of performances that fuse contemporary dance with Hip Hop and commercial styles in Triptych, a collaboration with acclaimed Hip Hop dance theatre company Boy Blue’s Young Artists.

From 25-26 May Marisa Carnesky will turn a Brighton street into a circus with nine stages and a cast of 33 aerialists, wrestlers, variety dancers, contemporary clowns and contortionists. Created especially for Brighton Festival, Carnesky’s Showwomxn Sideshow Spectacular celebrates the forgotten women of the variety show’s unique history, inspired by Carnesky’s own research at the National Fairground and Circus Archive. Performers include Netflix star Tallulah Haddon, World Record holding hula hoop artist Symoné and Bollywood dancer Kaajel

Further highlights include, J Neve Harrington SOMETIMES (4 May); Fault Lines (15 May) Lîla Dance Brìghde Chaimbeul joins forces with performance artists Maëva Berthelot and Temitope Ajose for Where the Veil is Thin (5 May); The Sticky Dance (17 May) For young audiences from disabled-led dance company Second Hand Dance; The Rainbow Butterfly (18 May) a joyful, transformational journey exploring the world and outer space as a Rainbow Butterfly and SABOTAGE Brighton Festival favourites NoFit State Circus will bring their latest Big Top production SABOTAGE to Brighton for a fabulous Festival Extra in August on the all-new Black Rock Event site. Audiences can expect original live music, breath-taking circus, stunning imagery, and a theatrical feel.
