Brings her famous neon artworks to Rich Mix, Bethnal Green

After featuring on the façade of Tate Britain in 2020, and in Covent Garden’s Market Building in 2021, Chila brings a selection of her beloved neon lights to Rich Mix’s new ground floor Streetside space (formerly Indi-go Restaurant) for a free exhibition. So get up close with bold, colourful installations combining Hindu mythology, British iconography, Bollywood glamour, colonial history and her childhood.

Brought up in Liverpool and educated at London’s Slade School of Art, Chila Kumari Singh Burman MBE has worked experimentally across printmaking, painting, sculpture, photography and film since the mid-1980s. She draws on fine and pop art imagery in intricate multi-layered works which explore Asian femininity and her personal family history and were Bollywood bling merges with childhood memories.

The exhibition will include 3k Heart, Bindi and Neons, Standing Krishna with Flute and Punjabi Rockers, in a collection that delves into Indian myths and customs, alongside childhood memories of family visits to the Blackpool Illuminations.
