Reaching the parts other festivals do not reach

The countdown has begun for this years Essex Book Festival with an unmissable programme full of exciting, innovative, challenging, and fun events. Taking place in over 40 venues across the county with something to cater for all, and a wide range of ways to get involved, the distinctive programme of events spans everything from history to politics: art to environmentalism.

The programme celebrates ‘literature in motion’ inviting audiences to attend events on the move and across Essex. There will be an unforgettable Radical Pilgrimage following The Saffron Trail with artist, writer and wildcrafter Lora Aziz as she embarks on a 7-day 70-mile pilgrimage (15-21 June) from Southend Pier to Saffron Walden.

Legendary author and performance poet John Agard will delight festival goers with a selection of readings including his 2022 children’s book When Creature Met Creature and Kev F Sutherland will be hosting an unforgettable Comic Art Masterclass.  Sam Scott, author of the spooky Sophie Spirit trilogy will be giving Top Writing Tips for how to design and develop a believable character. On 7 June, Booker Prize winner Eleanor Catton discusses her new novel Birnam Wood, and on 20th June, award-winning author William Hussey will be signing copies of his latest book Killing Jericho.

Other highlights include Sandra Lawrence talking about her fascinating memoir Miss Wilmott’s Ghosts and for those itching to enhance their writing skills, Essex Writers House will also be popping up for its sixth edition.

Finally don’t forget the fantastic family Midsummer Madness Day at Cressington Temple Barnson on Sunday June 25.  Awash with children’s author events, theatre, poetry and craft workshops. It will be a magical day to remember!
