During 2023 the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art celebrates its 25th anniversary with events and exhibitions by Giorgio Morandi and Osvaldo Licini.

Giorgio Morandi: Masterpieces from the Magnani-Rocca Foundation - 6 January – 30 April 2023

The Estorick Collection brings together some of the finest and most important works created by Italian artists during the first half of the twentieth century, and is Britain’s only museum devoted to modern Italian art.

The collection is known for its outstanding core of Futurist works. Founded in 1909 by the poet F. T. Marinetti, who wanted to break with the oppressive weight of Italy’s cultural heritage and develop an aesthetic based on modern life and technology, particularly speed and the machine.

To mark its 25th anniversary, the Estorick Collection is proud to present a major exhibition of works by Giorgio Morandi. For the first time, the entire collection of 50 paintings and works on paper by the artist belonging to Italy’s Magnani-Rocca Foundation will be on show in the UK.

Best known for his enigmatic still lifes, Morandi is today widely recognised as one of the most significant figures of modern Italian art – and certainly one of the most beloved.

A number of sculptors are also represented in the Collection, including Medardo Rosso, whose wax and plaster sculpture Impressions of the Boulevard: Woman with a Veil (1893) is the earliest work on display.

Osvaldo Licini: Rebellious Angel -17 May – 27 August 2023

The first exhibition dedicated to the work of Osvaldo Licini (1894-1958) in the UK. A key figure of 20th-century Italian art, Licini participated in the Futurist movement before establishing himself as a figurative painter of portraits, landscapes and still lifes. During the1930s he adopted a geometric abstract style then, during the Second World War, changed his style once again, going on to produce highly imaginative works animated by fantastical characters. This show explores the key phases of Licini’s career, and features many of the artist’s greatest masterpieces.
