Punishment – Rehabilitation – Redemption

1787 saw the first voyages carrying convicts from England to Australia and the setting up of a penal colony. Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play depicts the build up to a performance of George Farquhar’s drama, The Recruiting Officer, by the convicts. With the blessing of His Excellency Captain Arthur Phillip, the new governor of the colony, and under the direction of Second Lieutenant Ralph Clark, it is thought that the introduction of drama will have a beneficial effect on the lives of the prisoners.

Our Country's Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker and Directed by Peta Barker is based on The Playmaker, by Thomas Keneally, who is perhaps best known for his book Schindler's Ark. The novel examines various forms of theatre and so, by inviting the audience to bear witness to the convicts' rehearsal process, the play is in turn creating a meta theatrical world and referring us to its own stylistic conventions.
