Now is the perfect time to book a visit to our historic site - The Red House in Aldeburgh.
Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears home in Aldeburgh offers a charming snapshot into the couple's life. The farmhouse, nestled in a beautiful five-acre garden, is home to their collections and archive, alongside a gallery space, museum shop and outdoor café. The interior of the farmhouse provides an accurate picture of their life together - telling not only their story but also that of the family, friends and famous guests who stayed or visited there.
There's plenty to enjoy: a picnic and croquet on the lawn, follow the family garden trail, hear a story from the archive, visit the shop or explore an exhibition.
The archive is home to Britten and Pears’ music manuscripts, papers, rare books and art collection – the most complete composer archive in the world. Every Thursday to Saturday it will be open for drop in ‘stories from the archive’ to share this extraordinary collection.
The art collection totals around an impressive 1,200 pieces, kept in the archive when not on display. Most represent works by their friends or connections, with mid-20th century British art at the heart of their collection.
The house and garden are open for all to explore Thursday to Sunday from 30 March until October.
