Upcoming London exhibitions Julie Mehretu & Christian Marclay
White Cube is delighted to present two London exhibitions:-
Julie Mehretu: They departed into their own country another way
Friday 15 September 2023 - 5 November 2023, White Cube Bermondsey
This exhibition will mark Julie Mehretu’s fifth solo presentation at White Cube. One of the most influential artists of her generation, Mehretu’s complex, multi-layered, calligraphic language is acutely attuned to the constant transformation of the political moment. Returning to White Cube’s Bermondsey site for the first time since ‘Liminal Squared’ in 2013, the exhibition will encompass all of the gallery’s spaces and debut three new series of paintings. Two of these series are executed in ink and acrylic on canvas, with the third comprising new work on semi-translucent polyester mesh. Taking images from current affairs media sources, and in particular from coverage of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the US Capitol insurrection of 6 January 2021, Mehretu translates the material to arrive at her own distinctive form of abstraction.
Christian Marclay: Doors – 6 – 30 September 2023, White Cube Mason's Yard
Constructed from cinematic footage collected over ten years, Doors constitutes a montage of short, sampled film clips featuring the opening and closing of doors, continuing the vocabulary of some of the artist’s most celebrated video works including The Clock (2010). Returning to sculpture for the first time in two decades, Marclay debuts new works made using found doors. By cutting, chiselling and stacking, the doors undergo a process of deconstruction and reconstitution, akin to the editing employed to create the video.
